News Configuration

To configure Microsoft Outlook Express to browse the newsgroups with Free-Internet, open Microsoft Outlook Express and at the top, click on Tools and select Accounts.   The window below should appear.  Click the News tab once if it is not already selected.

  • If you are editing an existing connection, you can match settings in the configuration screens.

  • If you are adding a new profile for Free-Internet, click on the Add button and select News. The Internet Connection Wizard will appear and you will be prompted for the following information in this order:

  1. Real Name - You may enter your real name in upper or lower case with spaces.  This name will appear in all outgoing messages.  A real name is required, but is doesn't have to be your own. You may choose to use a nickname if you prefer to remain anonymous.

  2. Internet E-Mail Address - Your e-mail address is user_name@free-internet.co.uk   Although not required, the e-mail address is generally typed in lowercase.

  3. Internet News Server Names - The news NNTP server should be set to news.rapid.co.uk  Our news server does NOT require you to log on. 

  4. Friendly Name - This is for your own personal reference.  You may enter anything here, such as "My Mail", "Internet Mail", "RapidNet Mail", etc.

  5. Internet News Connection - For dial-up PPP connections, select "Connect using my phone line".  If you are connecting through a LAN ISDN, select "Connect using my local area network".  Make sure that Free-Internet is listed for the Dial-Up Networking connection.  There is no need to click Add or Properties.

  6. Click Finish.

  7. Click Properties and verify that the correct information is displayed in the following screens:
